Opoponax is an aromatic resin/gum obtained from plants in the Commiphora genus—the same broad genus associated with myrrh. It is sometimes called “sweet myrrh”, although that name can be misleading because opoponax has its own distinct aroma and isn't simply a sweeter version of ordinary myrrh.

What does opoponax smell like?

When burned, opoponax tends to have a:

  • Warm, sweet, balsamic aroma
  • Rich, resinous character
  • Slightly spicy quality
  • Earthy/woody undertones
  • Sometimes a subtle vanilla-like or caramelized sweetness
  • A somewhat musky depth

Compared with regular myrrh, opoponax as generally sweeter, warmer and softer, whereas myrrh tends to be drier, sharper, more medicinal and bitter.

It can be quite beautiful when blended with frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, sandalwood, cedar, or other woods/resins.

Traditionally speaking, what is Opopanax burned for?

Opopanax incense is spiritually used for: Purification, Protection, Meditation, Spiritual/ritual incense, Grounding

It's particularly useful in ritual and ceremonial incense blends because it provides a deep, warm resinous foundation without being as aggressively pungent as some resins.
