In either case, since the charcoal becomes very hot, I prefer to place ash, sand or rocks into the base of the burner to buffer and reduce the transfer of heat. Then place burner onto a ceramic coaster to protect counter top a the base may get hot. Then simply follow instructions to light charcoal tablet and place tablet on the mesh screen (I prefer to flip the lid so that it is concave and creates a bowl-like shape).
